Due to building work outside our Owl & Lion, we had to postpone The Black Forest until the 16th of this month. Fortunately every Artist has been able to accommodate with the date change to which we are very grateful. This is going to be a fantastic show.

BIG DRAW!

At the OWL & LION FOR OCTOBER we are joining in The Big Draw with a series of Events and Workshops on the 26th of October. We have a whole range of drop in activities starting at 12 pm to 4pm.

Come and draw your own pet rock, badge making for children and several different drawing workshops.

All workshops shall be held in Grassmarket Square in Front of The Lot Cafe, unless raining. All ages with adults welcome.

Event One:
Description:Drawing with Artist Maki Hamada
- Maki practices intricate line drawings on canvas, using a selection of fine pens and small collage materials, work with Maki to create your own canvas of a forest scene.

Event Two:
Description: Edinburgh City Forest
- Darts shall be thrown at a giant map of Edinburgh City centre. We shall draw line connecting the dots. You will then be lead by an artists to ‘travel the lines’ and draw what you find at the dots. A very exciting way of discovering Edinburgh.
12pm - 1.30pm
2.30pm - 4pm
Children must be accompanied by an adult.
bring your own sketchbook and drawing materials

Event Three:
Description: Come and make BIG BIG drawings of the best view in Edinburgh, looking out from the Gallery's big glass window. Using artist Isabelle's favourite materials of wash, charcoal, oil sticks and inks, be prepared to create something BIG! If the weather is good, we shall draw in Grassmarket Square.

West Port Book Festival

We will be acting as a venue for the West Port Book Festival(14-17 August)hosting readings by Ruth Thomas, Dilys Rose and Gerry Loose. Isabelle will also be holding a Bookbinding Workshop on the 14th and 15th at 7pm(Free but you have to book!) teaching Japanese binding techniques.

Representing artists from around the world and the UK, we have put together a unique showcase of Artist Books which not only celebrate the 'Art of the Book' in its various shapes and forms but also to reveal a fascinating world of fine craftsmanship.
Each piece tells a personal story, by integrating the idea of the book into a wider, more artistic framework. This is reflected by the use of various bookbinding techniques and mediums.

The OWL & LION is proud to introduce a new idea of how we experience and view The Book. By transcending traditional perceptions, 'Artist Books' reveals an alternative, exciting new world of Art and Book in which both concepts mutually enrich and reinforce each other and their messages.

Night & Day - SPINE

Our Upcoming Exhibition entitled SPINE, showcases Artist Books created by second year Drawing and Painting students at the Edinburgh College of Art.
This three day event is one of the monthly Night and Day Student Exhibitions at the OWL & LION which aims at offering students a unique opportunity to showcase their work and to gain valuable experience in curating their own exhibition.

Opening : Monday 16th June, 6-8pm
Running until : Wednesday 18th June
General Opening hours: 11am - 6pm

Inextinguishable Show

Pictures of our exhibition launching a volume of poems by the Scottish poet James W. Wood, published by Knucker Press, and launched in conjunction with other works by small press and self-publishers.

Featuring the launch of Caroline Cloughley's Jewellery Collection 'Beautiful Nightmares'

'Inextinguishable', is also an exhibition of work celebrating a diverse range of responses to poetry by young illustrators and artists from the Edinburgh College of Art (ECA). Runs until 15th June.

Well our new look website is now live, we listened to your suggestions and hopefully have improved upon the old site. I am aware of a few problems still with the site, but these should be fixed over the weekend. You might notice we have a new online shop which currently has a range of bespoke books from our small press series. We also have our cult OWL Bags available online, so please have a browse.

'The Three of us met on the 4th of April 2007. We sat round the table and did 27 drawings connected with 'TRI'. An enjoyable but scary day was had by us all. There is nothing more frightening or beautiful than a sheet of white paper, especially if there are two people watching. 'TRI' it.'

Ewan popped by yesterday and dropped off his newest creation. We only have a few of these beautiful boxes and I'm sure they wont be on the shelves very long. Inside each box is a miniature set of Ewan's 8 Houses drawing series, along with a great little badge.

Fantastic turn out last night. Very interesting to see the space evolve as the night drew near. Works visible in daylight would begin to dissipate allowing the more ambient pieces to take prominent position.

COOP - Setting up

We are currently setting up our second NIGHT & DAY show promoting emerging art.
COOP is a collaboration between Sculptor Michael Hanna, Graphic Designer Gil Cocker and Installation Artist Nika Kupyrova, brought together by their shared interest in working with space.

Show opens Friday 4th for Private View - 6 - 8pm
Saturday 11am - 6pm
And Sunday 12pm - 6pm

Got a nice surpise in the mail today, Stephanie Black has sent us her quirky cool bookcase in the form of a bird house. It holds her small artists book collection and is fixed nicely on our walls, to see is a must!

For us it has, the weather has changed, no dark greyness and rainy times, well i hope not. Its sunny and a wee bit warmer and i think everyone should pop down to us and check out the beautiful things that we have.

For starters, Isabelle has just finished and packed our new range of Artists books.
Eric Ernest Johnson, Stephanie Black, Andrew Woodside, Marcin Potepski and Peter Standen have all contributed wonderful covers. Limited to editions of 50.

Glasgow School of Art - NOT BROKEN...

Our First NIGHT AND DAY Project will be in support against the closure of the Glasgow School of Art Ceramic's Department.

Student Ester Svensson will be Co-Curating the exhibit and has been heading the fight against the closure.

"The Head of Design at Glasgow School of Art, has recommended that no new undergraduates will be accepted for both the full and part-time Ceramic degree courses, which will therefore result in the end of undergraduate ceramic education in Scotland. This decision, taken in haste without any staff or student consultation will have major implications for Scottish design, culture and tourism. As ceramic students of GSA, we feel passionately that there is a promising future for ceramics in Scotland and are disappointed that GSA lacks the vision and courage to support a profitable and innovative element of the design school".

You can support this cause by signing the online petition.

The Exhibition opens this Friday - 29th Feb at 5pm and will run until Sunday 2nd March.
